What is functional testing?
You might be thinking, what in the heck is functional testing ?!
Well I’m glad you asked. :) Functional testing is a term given to testing that looks at health from whole systems perspective. Instead of just looking at labs, we can look at hair, stool, and urine to gather so much data about a person. There are many different types of functional tests. The testing that I use in my practice is HTMA, GI MAP and DUTCH.
HTMA stands for hair tissues mineral analysis. It is a great test that allows us to see what your mineral composition looks like in your tissues. We can also look at the blood for minerals, but the blood is tightly regulated. So you won’t see an imbalance in the blood until it’s a serious problem.
GI MAP is a stool test that gives good insight into a person’s gut health. It tells you what and how much good bacteria and bad bacteria you have in you gut. It can also give hints to how well you are or aren’t digesting food. As well as provide insight on any inflammation you have going on. Gut health has a huge impact on the rest of the body.
DUTCH testing is a great test to look at female hormone and cortisol production. This can be super helpful to see if a female is producing progesterone and how her body is metabolizing estrogen. It can also tell use what your cortisol levels are throughout the day.
Functional testing is extremely helpful for someone who has persistent gut issues, painful periods, sluggish metabolism, poor energy, brain fog and infertility.
